Gone are the days when Bollywood was about the bold and the beautiful. The Hindi film industry has slowly but surely started to take up challenging and out of the box subjects. From a sperm donor to same sex relations and from Piku’s constipation storyline to now the subject of erectile dysfunction, Bollywood is fast cutting through the chase to make a point.

Ayushmann Khurrana starrer Shubh Mangal Savdhaan is probably the bravest thing that can happen in Bollywood. Something that was being discussed in hushed tones has become the subject of a Bollywood movie – erectile dysfunction.

The subject is not part of the usual song and dance brigade that has become the norm in Bollywood. Given the recurrence of the problem in men, it is an important film that atleast tries to initiate a dialogue on the dos and dont’s for those suffering the health related ailment.

The film comes close on the heels of the Akshay Kumar starrer Toilet : Ek Prem Katha which talked of the lack of toilets in India. There is also Padman which is about sanitary pads.

Analysts largely are of the view that Shubh Mangal Saavdhan is an attempt to change the usual image of the macho Indian hero, to portray the flipside. In an interview to a popular daily lead actress, Bhumi Pednekar says it is total bullshit that men with erectile dysfunction are not man enough.

Shubh Mangal Saavdhan director R.S Prasanna used impotence to tackle wider issues of patriarchy and conservative values prevalent in society.

The movie is a remake of the 2013 Tamil-language comedy Kalyana Samayal Sadham directed by Prasanna.

The film censor board cleared it with a U/A, parental guidance certificate, without any cuts.

Ayushmann’s Mudit in “Shubh Mangal Saavdhan” suffers from performance anxiety whenever he tries to make out.

The movie has fared well at the Box office with a good collection of 14.46 crore coming in. Two of his films releasing in a matter of a fortnight and doing similar business with same target audience base is quite a plus.

A Life Science Intelligence (LSI) report suggests, erectile dysfunction (ED) is estimated to affect more than 150 million men worldwide and the number of men with ED is expected to double by the year 2030.

ED is more common in men older than age 65, most men older than the age of 40 experience occasional difficulty.

Current estimates state chronic ED affects about 5% of men in their 40s and 15-25% of men by the age of 65. Inadequate erection affects as many as 50% of men between the ages of 40 and 70.
