Padhega India Tabhi to Badhega India is a famous catchline coined to promote education but a closer look at the education being imparted exposes the gaps in the infrastructure. Schools in the country suffer a severe shortage of teachers.
A report submitted in Parliament in 2016, states there are 1,05,630 schools in the country where there is only one teacher. An overall estimation shows MP to be at the bottom with 17,874 schools suffering this plight.
Reportedly there is a shortage of about 50,000 teachers in Madhya Pradesh.
Some time ago news channel NDTV examined schools of Madhya Pradesh, where there is a shortage of teachers and there is no suitable infrastructure for students.
More than 60% of children after going to school for three years could not read their names. Only 50 percent of children reach class Xth in the long run state media reports.
In Shajapur in Madhya Pradesh in 12 years, the roof of a school started dripping, land was washed.
The primary, middle, high school in the same campus runs at Kanya Vidyalaya situated at Panvadi, 20 kilometers away. There are two teachers for 107 girls.
According to National Institute of Education Planning and Administration, 42000 schools in the country do not have their own buildings. Agencies report nearly 14000 school buildings are defective.
In UP there are about 1100 defective school buildings. Around 50000 schools lack blackboards and there are 1,77, 000 teachers in the schools in U.P.
Statistics show a teacher is employed in 42000 schools in UP, while 62000 schools have two teachers.
An agency report shows children were forced to sit in toilets and gain knowledge.
A similar case has come from an elementary school in Neemuch district of Madhya Pradesh, where there is no place for the school.
This school built in 2012 is being run by a teacher. It is 35 km away from the Neemuch district headquarters.
According to a news agency, till 2013 this school was being run on a rented house, but rooms are now not currently available. School teacher Kailash Chandra claims he is forced to take classes in the toilet. It also came to light that when it rains, this toilet becomes a shelter for goats.
Education Minister Vijay Shah of Madhya Pradesh is quoted saying there are around 1.25 lakh schools in the state and due to limited means it is not possible to expand buildings further.
