Sunny Leone: Winner in a losing game

Sunny Leone is a star now, not in the porn world but in the real more open world of glitz and glamour. She is on silver screen, she is on TV and she is also someone who has cared to take up causes and work with dedication towards them. From the naked sin of porn to the prying camera angles of Bollywood, Sunny still remains a persona whose looks have always been used to grab attention. But the real Sunny is much more than just looks and sex appeal. Sunny made a name for herself as an adult entertainer, but when she watched porn for the first time in her life, she was disgusted by it. Born on May 13, the 39 year old sensation was a more demure Karanjit Kaur Vohra as a kid. A girl who in school would be called someone smelling like aloo ka paratha, flaunting a fanny pack with unkempt hair and hairy legs.

A butt of jokes as a child, she was a girl who unlike her friends had no boyfriend. She was a good student and got good grades. Brought up in a traditional Sikh family of good culture, she got all those lessons from her family that any girl would get at home. As a girl seeing life and its various shades, she always wanted to be a nurse in Orange County who would serve the masses and cure there pain. From America, Sunny and her family shifted base to Canada.

As someone who was good in academics she pursued education and while in college, she would also do a part time job in a German Bakery for pocket money. She also worked with a tax and retirement firm. While working Sunny met Jiffy Lube. With no boyfriend, proximity to Jiffy gave her the insight into her bisexual self. For the first time, Sunny started spending time with Jiffy in her house without telling her parents.

Befriending Jiffy gave her a view of the highlife. It was Jiffy who actually got Sunny’s porn career started by introducing Sunny to John Stevens. What started off as  modelling, gradually turned into her being part of the adult film scene. John gave her the idea which became a reality given the fact that Sunny by now had lost all inhibition. By that time she was already brought in contact with Penthouse magazine photographer Jay Allen who she was ready to pose nude to. When the print of the photo was released she rechristened herself as Sunny.

While the projects continued without the information of the family, the family came to know about her work much later. Both parents broke their relation with Karanjit, once the truth was out. Lost and lonely without a roof on top, her co star and husband Daniel Weber came into her life as a care giver.

Sunny Leone directed 42 films and starred in 41. It was Weber’s guidance who got Sunny the gig at Bigg Boss, where she despite fears rocked the scene with a gamut of offers coming to her from Bollywood.  In Bollywood, Sunny made her entry with Pooja Bhatt’s Jism 2 and has acted in a number of films like Ragini MMS 2, Ek Paheli Leela, One Night Stand and Tera Intezaar. She co hosts MTV Splitsvilla with Rannvijay Singha on the small screen.

As someone who has decided not to return to the rather ugly world of porn, Sunny has decided that she will not kiss any other hero on screen nor will she do nude scenes. Since 2015, Sunny is still ahead in the most searched Indian heroine on Google.

As someone who is unapologetic, she does not hide anything about her life. She has adopted a baby girl Nisha and has two twin sons Asher and Noa.  Facing fierce online abuse, her cyberbullies reached her house to cause harm when Daniel Weber was not in the country and she was living alone. Married to Daniel Weber since 2011, she also used to be in a relationship with stand-up comedian Russell Peters. Sunny was once engaged to Matt Erikson, the Vice President of marketing at Playboy. The two parted ways in 2008.
