For starters this day Lord Rama defeated demon Ravana in a battle to bring Sita home.
For Bengalis it is a day when Ma Durga ends the evil reign of demon king Mahishasura on the tenth day of the lunar calendar. It is also widely believed that Dussehra marks the return of Ma Durga to her in – laws from her maternal home.
Dussehra weatherwise marks the change of season from summer to winter. It ushers in the time for harvesting kharif crops and planting of rabi crop post Diwali.
It was Emperor Ashoka who converted to Buddhism on this day. Same day, Dr Ambedkar converted himself to Buddhism.
First grand celebration of Dussehra happened back in the 17th century at the behest of King of Mysore.
