More than the life of Sanjay Dutt, the trailer of Sanju has been gaining attention for the uncanny resemblance of Ranbir Kapoor to the star. Critics have already started writing that it would be worth watching if the film actually pieces together the real upheavals in the star’s life or is it just a promotion of the star.
As the film hits the screens today not just the star but the public at large is anxious to revisit those critical phases where life did not look good for Sanjay Dutt.
Sanjay Dutt has seen more downs than ups in his life, it’s a gripping tale of multiple reported girlfriends, internal and external battles, death of his mother 3 days before Rocky was screened, drug addiction, the 1993 Mumbai Bomb Blast case and his life in and out of jail.
Friend, close confidante and director of Sanju, Rajkumar Hirani calls the star a goldmine for a filmmaker.
Sanjay Dutt entered the Bollywood scene with ‘Rocky’ in 1981. Directed by father Sunil Dutt, the film has often turned Sanju Baba emotional because his mother passed away 3 days before his onscreen debut. This was a big shocker to Dutt and he turned to drugs post his mother’s death.
Heavily into narcotics it took him almost a decade to get out of it thanks to a rehabilitation centre in the US.
Sanju married Richa Sharma in 1987, and the two had a daughter, Trishala, who resides in the United States. He was also rumoured to be dating Madhuri Dixit, and other 90’s actresses. By his own admission he is said to have dated three women at one time.
His first wife Richa Sharma passed away due to brain tumour in the year 1996. Madhuri Dixit distanced herself from him.
He married Rhea Pillai in 1998, but the two separated in 2005.
In 2008, Dutt married Maanyata Dutt, and the couple have two children, Shahraan and Iqra Dutt.
Dutt was accused of being involved in the carnage in Mumbai Bomb Blasts 1993. He had allegedly accepted weapons at his house from Abu Salem and fellow accused Riyaz Siddique. He was granted bail by the Supreme Court in 1995, but was then re-arrested again in December 1995. He was released on bail in April 1997. However, the case came to court in 2006, and he spent seven months in jail. In 2013, he was sentenced to jail once again and then came out in 2016.
His films like Jodi No. 1, Kaante, Munnabhai MBBS and then Lage Raho Munnabhai helped him hit the big times.
The overall expectations from the film are high given that it promises to be the first time that the star is being shown in reel life. The trailer launch of the film saw the entire cast and crew of the film including Rajkumar Hirani, Vidhu Vinod Chopra, Vijay Singh, Bhushan Kumar, Ranbir Kapoor, Sonam Kapoor, Paresh Rawal, Manisha Koirala, Dia Mirza and Vicky Kaushal. Anushka Sharma was missing from the launch .
The trailer has garnered appreciation for the apt portrayal of Sanjay Dutt’s life.
Produced by Vinod Chopra Films and Rajkumar Hirani Films in association with Fox Star Studios. ‘Sanju’ is all set to be released on 29th June 2018.
Whether his life is a life extraordinaire is open for debate but his struggles and triumphs do teach us that one must admit mistakes and reform. His life shows you that a person is made up of both the good and the bad and there needs to be a balance.
