In protest mode since October 2, farmers in Rajasthan upping the ante have ensured that the Vasundhara Raje regime bow in front of their demands. They have finally called of their month long stir.

Hundreds of farmers ‘buried’ themselves in the ground to enable talks between them and the Vasundhara Raje-led regime.

After a month long deadlock, talks between representatives of Ninder Bachao Yuva Kisan Sangharsh Samiti and government ended the protest.

It all started with the Jaipur Development Authority (JDA) acquiring agricultural land, allegedly at low rates, for a housing project.

Over 800 farmers, including 500 female farmers gave up food and had been protesting.

Land acquisition in Ninder had been on since 2010. The village is around 20 km away from Jaipur. The farmers claimed compensation was not enough, given the market rates spiralled in seven years.

The protest led by Ninder Bachao Kisan Yuva Samiti proposed to the JDA that a fresh land survey be conducted with specific points in mind.

Reportedly of the 1,300 bighas of land to be acquired – 1,100 bighas of it is privately owned – for a housing scheme announced in January 2011. It took possession of 600 bighas by early October and deposited Rs 60 crore in court for acquired land.

The proposed project would have had as many as 10,000 houses.

Experts say nearly 5,000 families, including farmers, are to be affected by the acquisition.

Rallies and demonstrations had started sometime in mid-September.

The farmers had celebrated Diwali at the protest site by lighting earthen lamps.

Farmers have however agreed that meanwhile construction work will be allowed to begin.

Around 10,000 houses will be built under a scheme announced in January 2011.

The opposition Congress in Rajasthan has charged the Raje regime of failing to reach out to farmers’ families protesting.
