Preparations for the biennial Defense Expo-2020 on the theme ‘India: Emerging Defense Manufacturing Hub’ have been on in full swing. With preparations and drills almost over in Lucknow, the state capital will be abuzz with activity between February 5 and February 10. The expo aims to bring leading technologies in the defense sector under one roof and provide innumerable opportunities for government, private manufacturing and startups.

The event will cover an entire gamut of aerospace, defense and security interests of the country. The expo will have a business conference on 6 and 7, while 8 and 9 will have a special opportunity for general public to get a sneak peek into the military might of India. The expo will be held at Vrindavan Yojana Sector 15 and Gomti River Front View.

On 5 January 2020, Defense Minister Rajnath Singh along with Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath reviewed the preparations for the Defense Expo-2020 in Lucknow. The defense minister has released a teaser film during the review meeting which is being broadcast on various platforms.

In a recent comment the UPDA has said that a steep 989 exhibitors, including 165 foreign companies have registered so far. With this the Lucknow defence expo has become the largest defense exhibition surpassing previous defence expos like Chennai.

An exponential increase of the expo space has been seen, which has gone up by 58 percent to 42,800 square meters as compared to about 26,774 sqm in the previous edition. The mega show at Shaan – e – Awadh will see defense ministers and service chiefs panning 18 countries confirming their presence. The numbers are likely to go up. Meanwhile a number of memoranda of undertakings are also likely to happen. Apart from PM Modi, many leaders including Defense Minister Rajnath Singh, UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath will be present during this program.

While the idea is to rethink a future strategy for the future battleground, there will also be a close focus on manufacturing for the aerospace and defense sector through new technologies. In addition to live demonstrations of products and technologies at the exhibition, the Defense Public Sector Undertakings (DPSU) and industry will showcase land, naval, air and internal security systems.

The India Pavilion will throw open an exhibit of joint performance between the public and private sector, including Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) / Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) and innovation eco-systems, which is the key to moving forward. As a centre for the expo, the state will also be taking this opportunity to show its cultural splendour to the world.

The significance of an event like this is being seen as high because the central government has established a defense industrial corridor in Uttar Pradesh. A Defense Planning Committee has also been formed. Those in the know maintain that the Defexpo will play a role in attracting not only investment in the field, but also cutting-edge technologies. All the weapons of the army including tanks, aircraft and equipment will be giving live demonstrations at this expo.

Business seminars will be organized by the International and Indian Industry Chambers at the Defense Expo-2020 where several crucial discussions on Artificial Intelligence, Robotics, Internet of Things (IoT), drones, wired warriors, etc will keep the audience on the edge of their seat.
