You must have heard of movies like Special 26, Ab Tak Chhappan and Hazaar Chaurasi ki Maa but now there is a new guava variety in town named Lakhnau Unanchas.
Lucknow denizens can now take pride in its own unique variety.
Several new varieties have been developed while near-extinct, indigenous varieties of the region have been revived and are doing good business.
In nurseries of Malihabad there is no dearth of guava grafts says nursery owner Khan Ahmad Ashar to TOI.
Varieties from Lucknow are fast gaining popularity in Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana and western UP, making farmers in Malihabad grow these varieties.
Lakhnau Unanchaas was developed by Lucknow’s Central Institute of Subtropical horticulture (CISH).
Another name trending has been the ‘Barfkhana’, which gained fame for its genesis in an abandoned ice factory.
UP has about 45,000 hectare land under guava cultivation, mostly in Badaun, Pratapgarh, Allahabad and Kaushambi.
High quality varieties are being scientifically developed for fruit that has uniform shape, attractive skin, optimum size and pulp and fewer and soft seeds.
Programme for guava improvement started at CISH in 1987. So far, the Institute developed about 2,100 guava hybrids and about 1,000 famous varieties,” said the director to TOI.
