The Coronavirus has spread its impact on as many as 200 countries all across the globe. For how long will the average public stay locked indoors is hard to predict. As India reels under a 21 day lockdown till April 14, people are forced to sit at home. The professional fraternity has been working online from their work station at home. In India, the usage of internet data per user is 10.37 GB every month but in case of lockdown it is expected to go up as high as 15-18 percent.
Some are watching online videos, the others are playing online video games. All this even as the government has asked private companies to ask their employees to work from home.
For thousands of these employees the internet has fast turned into a staple to connect with the outside world. In times of a lockdown, the internet too seems to be playing truant. People working from home have been constantly facing the issue of slow net connectivity. Point is why is the internet so slow in these times, when people need access the most online.
At homes, apart from the household chores and the office work, there is also the youth who is now consuming major net time to play their favourite games online. As schools and colleges remaining shut with specific time for online classes, students are playing the most heavy mobile games like PUBG, call of duty. Some are also watching online videos. PUBG remains a hothit among mobile gamers in India. It is widely reported that PUBG tournaments are steadily on the rise. PUBG room IDs and passwords are shared on social media.
Datawrapper, a site that deals with all things data and tech shows, one hour costs 40 MB for playing PUBG Mobile, 100 MB on Fortnight, 120 MB on Dota-A and 45 MB of data on a League of Legends game. This is for default graphics. For HD graphics there is a sudden increase in data prices. Anyone watching Netflix in SD, in one hour you can watch 1,000 MB. In case of Netflix HD in the same time spend 3,000 MB data. The problem of slow internet is due to video streaming and online gaming.
To top it all, more of the data is spent on downloading games than playing online games. If you are playing PUBG then you will know that it costs about 2 GB data to download the full PUBG game. Reports suggest that on a computer, games like Xbox One and Play-Station cost up to 50 GB of data. Games like Assassin’s Creed Odyssey have a size of 49GB and Forza Horizon 4 has a size of 63GB. Internationally the speed of downloads has been spike in PlayStation games by Sony in Europe.
Video streaming companies like Netflix, Amazon Prime Video and YouTube all over the world including India have decided to show videos in SD by default during the lockdown period. Question remains how will video gaming be curbed, because most of the data is spent by gamers due to which work from home is facing problems.
