India on 16 Dec observes the fourth anniversary of the dastardly rape of a young girl who lost her life battling for life in Singapore. Each year there are calls for justice and nipping sex crimes in the bud. Sadly the crimes continue unabated.
Globally the recent Wonder Woman petition has been proof that people can go to any extent to up the ante against objectifying a women or worse violating her.
It was in October that the UN selected Wonder Woman as an honorary ambassador for empowerment of Girls and Women.
Gal Gadot is currently in role of DC Comics’ Wonder Woman. A solo picture comes out next summer.
With the appointment of Wonder Woman there was massive outrage and it led to ending the campaign courtesy the petition that received 45,000 votes.
The “overtly sexual image” of a white woman of impossible proportions, scantily clad in a shimmery, thigh-baring body suit with an American flag motif and knee high boots–the epitome of a ‘pin-up’ girl” did not fit into the scheme of things when talking of women empowerment.
But Shaan – e – Awadh Lucknow has seen a great example of women empowerment. Lucknow by March next year will get its Metro which will be fully functional by then.
Moving with the changing times Lucknow started the Metro trial on December 1. The train which chugged along on its trial was steered ahead by two pilots both women.
The pilots led from the front as Akhilesh Yadav flagged off the Lucknow Metro‘s first trials on Kanpur Road.
Pratibha and Prachi Sharma are ordinary women with big dreams. In a man’s world now women are working shoulder to shoulder with men in typical male bastions. Pratibha and Prachi Sharma are no exception.
Aiming to take Lucknowites on a speedy Metro ride they are breaking barriers of gender with them now gearing up to a joyous Metro pilot stint. Both women underwent rigorous training, both at Centre of Excellence of the Lucknow Metro Rail Corporation and at the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation.
This decision gave Lucknow the distinction of being the first city where women operators commence Metro trials. The Lucknow Metro has recruited 97 drivers, out of which 21 are women.
Except for Chennai, the other city metros have just 1-2% women operators. Pratibha and Prachi hail from Allahabad and are B Tech in electronics and communication engineering from SRMSCET and electrical engineer from IERT, Allahabad, respectively.
Both have been part of the Lucknow Metro family since June 9. It is worth noting that Lucknow has over time been taking baby steps in the direction of women empowerment. Recently in a bid to empower girls, Women Power Line 1090 has decided to induct girls from shelter homes to become communication officers.
Earlier, the communication officers were outsourced from a government-based agency.
Those girls who have passed Class XII and have basic knowledge of computer will be first trained for a month. Then, the better ones would be shortlisted and trained further. A communication officer will take distress calls, handle and register a complaint and also take feedback.
