Virat Kohli and Anushka Sharma have finally tied the knot for a better and more glorious future together. Virat becomes the second skipper of the Indian team to get into holy matrimony with a bollywood diva. First being Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi, who exchanged vows with none other than Bollywood icon Sharmila Tagore.
Sharmila and Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi met in 1965 through a common friend.
Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi became the titular Nawab of Pataudi at the age of 11. Pataudi proved his finesse in cricket during his years in Winchester and later in Oxford. MAK Pataudi made Test debut against England in winter of 1961. Despite his right eye being damaged by way of a shard of glass, his cricketing career flourished, and he earned the title ‘Tiger’ for his electrifying fielding.
If Sharmila was India’s sweetheart, Pataudi was the heartthrob. One was cementing a place in the audience’s hearts with her super performances on silver screen, the other was giving the opposition sleepless nights by destroying attack on the cricket field as a skipper.
Like any love affair, things were not at all smooth sailing. It took a lot of wooing by Pataudi to convince Tagore.
It is said Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi was bowled over by Sharmila Tagore’s beauty, grounded streak and maturity, she on the other hand was attracted to his charm and sense of humour.
For Sharmila’s middle class Bengali parents, marriage to a royal was not at all happening. Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi’s parents had reservations about bringing an actress into the family. She a Hindu, he a Muslim did not help.
There was a strong buzz back then Sharmila was excommunicated by a Hindu guru and she converted to Islam and took on the name Ayesha Sultana. But that was not the only change.
The actress graciously moulded herself into the role of a Nawab’s wife, even quitting films for a while to play the perfect begum to her real-life hero. There were enough elements in their love story to warrant a film.
The two had apparently met in 1965 through common friends, when Sharmila was in Delhi for a shoot.
According to some reports, he even gifted Sharmila a refrigerator in a bid to win over his love.
Sharmila has even admitted in interviews that Tiger hadn’t seen any of her films and she could never get him hooked on Bollywood.
There was, however, a lot of respect between the two. Both were comfortable in their space. If Sharmila gave up films, it was not under pressure, and Pataudi always respected her choices and was supportive of her decision, whether to quit or to go back to films
Sharmila born to parents related to Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore, delivered one huge Bollywood blockbuster after another with stars of that time like Shammi Kapoor and Rajesh Khanna.
MAK proposed marriage to his lady love on the streets of Paris, the most romantic city in the world.
The two tied the knot on December 27, 1969.
In many ways, Virat Kohli and Anushka Sharma’s relationship mirrors Sharmila Tagore and Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi’s.
