Winter is here has been on every lip as the Game of Thrones season was on and it just ended It continues to mesmerize the fan of the popular American series. Amidst the popular conversations and special highs and lows of the series are some unique hangouts that celebrate the popularity of the much talked about franchise inspired by George RR Martin’s classic – A Song of Ice and Fire.
While the world basks in the craze behind the series India is not far behind. Srinagar often known to be heaven but equally in news for all the turbulent times it goes through has some big GoT fans. Take for example a popular Game of Thrones based cafe called Winterfell.
In the year since it began, Winterfell has hosted two dozen events that include book readings, live music performances, illusionists, and discussions.
“Winter Is Coming” is the motto of House Stark, one of the Great Houses of Westeros. The meaning behind these words is one of warning and constant vigilance. The Starks, ruling the North, strive to be prepared for winter.
According to George R.R. Martin, it more generally expresses the sentiment that there are always dark periods in each of our lives, and even if things are good now (“summer”), we must always be ready for a dark period when events turn against us (“winter”).
Across Dal Lake, a popular hangout for tourists in Kashmir, is a Game of thrones theme-based Winterfell Cafe. A sword throne is the center piece, while posters from the show decorate the walls, a treat for an avid watcher of GoT.
Winterfell was shut for a brief period when unrest in the valley was witnessed but gradually things got back to normal.
Talks, Open Mic and music sessions are commonplace here. Started by one Kamran and cousin Ummar it has 12 tables but the cafe is perpetually jampacked.
Kamran was born in Srinagar but has worked in Turkey and Dubai in the past.
Kamran always loved to follow American television drama. It was the Game of Thrones series that stuck to his mind and he wanted to use the fanbase to his favour as an entrepreneur. His cousin a connoisseur of coffee brought his understanding of beverages and food to the table and then happened Winterfell.
Game of Thrones is a common thread that binds the two.
Winterfell is inspired by the seat of the ruler of the North and the traditional home of House Stark, located on Kingsroad that runs from Storm’s End to the Wall says Wikia.
From flags to posters and the little artefacts with an ever evolving environment and ambience, Winterfell is perhaps the best place for youngsters to hangout say the owners in an interview to a website.
Among the others part of the franchise are Basharat, Arif, Taposh and Mukhtiar.
Among the hot favourites here are Spaghetti, The Pineapple Wrapped Chicken, Steaks and Grills and the Chicken Mushroom Pot Pie.
This cafe away from the tense zones of the valley looks chic, plays good music, serves sumptuous delicacies and gives ample space for recreation.
“People come here to socialise, rather than eat,” Kamran Nisar tells Scroll.
Address of the cafe: Boulevard Road, Opp. Ghat No 5, Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir
