On lines of the Gulaabi Gang now a new group of women are active in the state of UP.

The Green group is cracking the whip on those drinking and gambling. With active door to door campaigns by them, people have started thinking twice before indulging in alcohol abuse and gambling.

Not only are they taking the matter to the administration but they are also instrumental in having a public discourse especially around issues like child marriage, dowry, sanitation along with village heads.

50 year old, Indravati Devi who resides in the Deora village of Arajiline block, 25 kilometers away from Banaras district headquarters is the leader of the green gang. She tells a local media outlet from whichever lane the green gang passes by gamblers start to scurry. They avoid gambling and drinking in front of us.

The Green Group was formed in Bhadrasi, Ramsipur, Jagardevpur village under the aegis of Hope Welfare Association, with the help of students.

After three months of training of the Green Group comprising of 25 women, these women have now become aware of their rights and duties. “It is our endeavor that the women of the rural areas came forward and fought for themselves. The women of this Green Gang were first illiterate when they were trained, now they have become aware, “says Ravi Mishra, spearheading the organizational working.

Raja Talab SDM Isha Dakhan tells local media, “The demands of this Green Group are not only in Banaras but everywhere. Women should not suffer from domestic violence, so they themselves have to raise their voice. In the last assembly elections, with the help of these women, voting increased by 10 percent. ”

These women have also taken the training of judo-karate, so that they can do their own self defense. The Hope Institute had earlier formed the Green Group in Deora and Khusri village.

There are such teams in every village, which can solve the problems at the village level, women do not raise their voice because they are not empowered enough.

A Gram Pradhan is quoted as saying, “Men are in the grip of intoxicants. Seeing this even children are taking to intoxicants. This effort of women is admirable in keeping children away from alcoholism. ”

Green Group is another name for women empowerment. The group saw a launch in Deora, Ghamhapur, Ramsiipur, Bhadrasi, Paranjpur, Khushiyari, Jagardevpur only recently.
